September issue of Vogue is the most important one in the whole year. This one will be even more spectacular as it celebrates the magazine’s 125th anniversary. What an extraordinary surprise the publishers prepared for us! The actress Jennifer Lawrence hasn’t been photographed – she has been painted by artist John Currin depicting the starlet in fashionable garb, including a striking red-and-white Miu Miu fur hat.
“To be in a situation of producing a cover for this famous magazine, I’m a little scared,” Currin told the New York Times. “I do worry about decorum.”
Well, decorum seems to be absolutely fine. The portrait is one of a quartet of covers commissioned by the magazine for its 125th-anniversary issue, along with photographs of Lawrence by Annie Leibovitz, Bruce Weber, and Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin.
John Currin (born 1962) is an American painter based in New York City. He is best known for satirical figurative paintings which deal with provocative sexual and social themes in a technically skillful manner. His work shows a wide range of influences, including sources as diverse as the Renaissance, popular culture magazines, and contemporary fashion models.
