Colonization not only exploited nations and took over territory, but it also looted cultural objects and art. Today, many of these treasures from America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania belong to Western museums. Governments and activists have been fighting to restitute as many pieces as possible, but it is an arduous and costly endeavor. Moreover, the illegal traffic of cultural objects continues to be profitable.
