Art history sometimes eats its tail. For example, you can find famous paintings depicted in other paintings. Paintings within paintings, who would have thought? There are plenty of examples from all the epochs when painters for several reasons were painting… a painting! Sometimes for representative reasons of the purchaser (“Look at my vast art collection!”), sometimes painters portrayed themselves with their best or most successful artworks, and sometimes the works shown on canvas had symbolic meanings.
